Grey, Grå and Harmaa

The babies are now 20, 18 and 16 days old and it seems they are all to be grey, opalines yes, and the two eldest are also yellowfaces.

We've had some trouble here too, as Frodo started to empty the nestbox i such extent, that I was forced to remove him. This happened last week right after my last post, when I saw coming home, that Frodo had emptied the whole nest box shoving the chicks to the other side in order to get everything out! I was so worried and not in vain, because Chiara stopped eating when she had no mate, and also stopped feeding the babies, she'd only hide her her in the wood shavings in the box or just sit on a perch. Only when I pushed a millet spray right in front of her she would nibble at it, but on thursday morning the babies didn't seem to have gotten any food in the crops during the night and as I'm quite sure I could never do the job as well as the parents, I decided to bring the father back and keep an eye on him.

Frodo is after all a little more wary of us humans, so he stands aside if someone gets closer and that is what I did. We also made the cage as dark as possible during the nights (the sun is after all up 24/7 right now) to reduce his hormone levels and it seems to have helped, because he's not hopping in and out at all anymore and the babies are growing and both parents seem to be doing fine. It was a great relief. Though I must now in order to be properly prepared, always try to rear two clutches at the same time and as an emergency solution also have formula at hand. Though I hope I never have to hand feed a single baby.

Poikaset ovat jo liki 2 viikkoa vanhoja ja vaikka kaikki sujuukin nyt hyvin, ihan ilman ongelmia ei olla selvitty. Frodo alkoi tyhjentämään pesää siinä määrin, että jouduin poistamaan sen tiistaina iltapäivällä ja siirtämään isoon häkkiin. Mutta tästä Chiara lannistui. Se ei syönyt itse, eikä syöttänyt poikasia ja aamulla tarkistaessani poikasilla oli enemmän tai vähemmän tyhjät kuvut. Emo vain työnsi päätään syvälle puruihin piiloon. Aikansa ratkaisua etsittyäni päätin lopulta laittaa Frodon takaisin ja yksinkertaisesti vahtia sitä ja hätistää pois pöntön läheltä. Se ei kuitenkaan edelleenkään ollut käyttäytynyt aggressiivisesti ketään kohtaan. Seuraava askel kun olisi ollut aloittaa käsinruokinta, mikäli Chiaran äidinvaistot eivät olisi palanneet.

Ja onneksi suunitelma toimi. Frodo rauhoittui päivä päivältä enemmän ja lopulta se ei enää tyhjentänyt pönttöä ollenkaan. Olemme myös pimentäneet häkin reilusti pimeämmäksi, jolla on saattanut hyvin olla osuutta hormoonitason laskuun ja tätä myötä yliaktiivisuuteen. Joten kaikki hyvin ja onneksi ei tarvinnut oppia tätä asiaa kantapään kautta, polvi riitti.
