Chirping Chicks

We have been away for two nights and even though I had some one here check on the babies I've been so worried! But they've been fine, of course. I think the H-clutch babies also have missed us a bit - they haven't been able to fly since the morning on the 23rd so that must have been an agony. The I-clutch has 3 chicks come out of the nest box completely, number 3 has been out several times before too, but always gone back. This time he seems to be out to stay. He's the one staying home from this clutch. All the chicks from H-clutch have already found good and loving homes. In case you read this too late and are interested in a CC budgie, you can always get a place in the waiting list, so you'll be among the first to pick a baby when the spring comes. I have to say, that even though very intense and very worrying and very stressful at times, having these budgie babies is just - it's lovely. They have grown into such fantastic little creatures whom I will be only happy to give to new homes learn about petbird life and give joy to humans. It does though hurt a little, when I have to think about giving any of them away. But the time is not here yet, I've still got almost 2 weeks left! Time goes so fast.. So we're leaving number 4 and 5 at home, because of the peculiar colours and because they've got good size and temper. They actually all have good size and temper and I'd be happy to leave any of these babies home! But we have to much grey too in the house, so probably the blue ones are good in that point of view too. About I-clutch I know not so much as of yet, the opaline girls seem to have a little milder temper, even when I still need to handle them everyday in not so positive a way, as the poop is still caking

Nimet on nyt H-pesueelle päätetty ja kutakuinkin myös se, mitkä poikaset tästä pesueesta jäävät kotiin. I start in reverse order to show you the youngest ones first who have been less in pictures. Above on the left is number five - a sweet little skyblue opaline and on the left number 4, also supposedly skyblue normal, but the colours don't match. He's darker, but still not cobalt either. Only chick number five, the youngest one that is hasn't yet completely climbed out of the nest and she has no hurry either. All the other chicks really enjoy their time outside, playing with toys and learning to eat themselves. All of them are still nights in the nest, also taking longer naps and getting fed my dad. Chiara has now spent first night away and I think she's started her winter break now. It seems that the parents otherwise would be taking round two, and it's not what they need.  H-babies start to be very restless in the nestbox, and not really settling in the cage either. Momma bird on the other hand won't very happily - if at all - let the kids get back to the nest box either, so I've felt safest taking her out of the cage, when I'm not home. She still feeds the youngest ones, so I haven't taken her yet completely, but that will most likely be the next step. Boss again hasn't yet really gotten on the job of feeding the babies when they've com out, but he seems   often to be thinking them as possible mating company.. Slow and steady, I believe he will get the hang of it eventually. Eldest and second eldest also know how to eat themselves, so they won't starve, I think number third also has started to taste some seeds. Third chick has been out too, but stays more inside and the two youngest ones haven't climbed out yet at all. They are now 27 and 29 days old, that is just around 4 weeks both of them. Been taking care of I-babies everyday now, because the mom keeps throwing all the bedding out and the papabird helps too occationally if he can fit in. Problem here is that the babies are still packed with food - all the time - and the amount of poop, now that they are older has also grown. Without bedding it sticks to their feet and even feathers, especially tail feathers, so I have been picking off the poop even twice a day. They are also messy eaters or she's a messy feeder, and the food gets stuck onto their beaks and feathers. Why this too, is a problem, is that if unnoticed the chick can get malformations on the beak, not be able to use their feet properly, again resulting in splayed legs or malformations or worse. I took the legwraps away yesterday, those also being dirty and the eldest seems to be standing pretty well, but I think some of the younger ones  might need a new one for a couple of days. Nyt on kaikista muokattu kunnon kuvat. Aivan ihmeellistä ettei keltanaamioita tullut yhtään! Joku on kuullut ajatukseni... Meidän kaikilla pesintäiässä olevilla naarailla on keltanaamio tyyppi II, joten niitä on jo aika reilusti 😅 Ja ei, nimiä ei ole vielä. Nyt minä vasta hoksasin, että meillä on pöntössä kaksi eri sinisen sävyä, joka siis tarkoittaa että Chiara on perusväriltään koboltti, sillä muutoin ei tummuusasteita voi tässä pesueessa näkyä Bossin ollessa vaaleansininen. Nelonen on siis koboltti normaali ja vitonen vaaleansininen opaali. Nelosella on lisäksi muutamia tummanharmaita sulkia sinisen seassa, joten tummuustekijä siellä tekee työtään, väri todennäköisesti tasoittuu ensimmäiseen sulkasatoon mennessä. Kakkonen vaikuttaa superuteliaalta ja kesyltä ja voikin olla, että se sittenkin etsisi uutta kotia perheestä jossa se saisi olla kesy perhelintu, eikä jäisi meidän puolivilliin parveen. The troubles don't seem to want to go away.. First with good news, Chiaras and Bosses babies do fine, very well actually. Chiara seems to be a lot more energetic now that Boss has finally started to help her with the chicks. This though didn't happen until I had taken the hen away a couple of times. Chiara has also stopped being as protective with the babies as she was before, maybe due to me handling her and her remembering that humans are not all the bad after all. I'm hoping some of them getting out of the next box already this week so that it wouldn't be so crowded! Number 1 and 2 have lovely long feathers already. But then to this tight sitting hen, Lilja... Her good intentions seem to have caused her babies even more harm, now the splayed legs sydrome. I noticed this on sunday morning, was suspecting it already when I ringed number two on saturday, but when I had to renew the banding as the ring had fallen off, I could very well see that both number 1 and 2, possi

  She's still the sweetest little budgie 💕 Chiara has gotten some time out of the cage now that she's started over grooming the chicks. That means she's nibbling their down off, and bald patches are appearing where they should be fluffy and white, or grey. But it's worked, Boss has started to feed the chicks instead and Chiara, every time she gets back, concentrates better on her babies. If it should get worse, we are now prepared to remove he all together. Here are number two, three and four. Four and five are the ones who she's plucked the most, and also here you can see the fluffy down which should be covering evenly all the back side of the chick, is blotchy. The elder chicks are better off already and luckily Chiara hasn't been plucking any of the chicks feathers. The colours of the babies are as follows: 1. Grey opaline 2. Grey cinnamon opaline 3. Grey opaline 4. Skyblue normal 5. Skyblue opaline None of the chicks are yellowface!

Tai eipäs liioitella, kuvia on vain yksi! Se on numero kaksi, eli Honda, Huyndai, tai Huawei. Olen kääntänyt sanat suomeksi ja makustelen tässä mikä olisi sopivin. Ehkä kuitenki Hiace, muodostettu sanoista sanoista High and Ace - kaikkea sitä oppii 😅 Se on suurella varmuudella poika, ykkönen vaikuttaisi edelleen tytöltä. Mutta miksi kuvien otto eilen jäikin näin vähälle - tai otin useampiakin, mutta olivat aika liikkuvaisia yllättäen ja kuvista tuli suttuisia - oli että ehdin siinä sitten puruja vaihtaessani ja poikasia katsellessani huolestua, että onkohan Chiara lie harrastanut "over-grooming"-ia eli hoitovieteissään rapsutellut poikasilta untuvia pois. Ei taida olla yhtä ainoaa päivää poikasten ollessa pönttöiässä, etteikö yksi tai toinen asia huolestuttaisi... Jos se on over-groomingia, eli jonkinlaista liiallista tai aggressiivista hoitamista, joka muuttuu negatiiviseksi vaikutuksiltaan, sitä on jatkunut vasta 1 tai maksimissaan 2 päivää. Lilja and Frodos fourth chick hatched today and that will be their last too. Two eggs remaining are light and dry. I took one of them away already, and left the other, though I'm sure it's no good. It was those two eggs I lifted up a week ago, when I was waiting for the first one to hatch and became so sad thinking it must have happened, or will happen to all of the eggs... But luckily I was wrong. So I'm happily waiting for the colours to start appearing as there is a nice chance for some violets! Violet is after all a dominant mutation, so the odds for getting a violet for a budgie chick is always 50%, but yes, you can also get tails 4 times a row... So it isn't a done deal just yet. Frodo will also be passing forward only skyblue, having no dark factors, and a skyblue violet will look like a cobalt. With Liljas cinnamon gene it's difficult for me to determine if she also has the cobalt gene, but it's likely. A cinnamon skyblue violet will on the other hand gi

The house has been empty the whole weekend, that is more than 6 hours per day, both days, which usually doesn't happen, as either the kids or I am at home. My friend has been here to take the dogs out and put some fresh food in the breeding cages. So we got home with the kids in the evening and all is well, I start to take the old food away and prepare some fresh for the parents to eat and ask my daughter who hasn't seen the newest bub - born this morning, and she goes "aaaw!" - and I want to take a look myself, because Lilja is still out of the nest box, but there's only two of them. There should be three. My first thought, it has been eaten - and while I thought that, my daughter points at a tiny little thing on the cage floor, unmoving. I pick it up right away but it's cold and I start breathing on it, I breath and I breath and go to the bath room to warm up my hands in hot water as they were ice cold coming outside just a moment before. Liljas and Frodos nest has now two chirpy-chirpers, as another egg hatched just today. This clutch will get letter I what comes to their names. I get superhappy now that I already got to fear the worst, I checked the eggs in a hurry as I do everything that has to do with anxious moms - and I saw some dried out eggs, but I'm so happy that my gloomy predictions didn't come true. Even two little chirpy-chicks for them is enough and if more is to come, I'm even happier. I'm really hoping for a violet, though I do acknowledge the difficulties in trying to figure out which one actually HAS the violet gene... But I will worry about that later. Now Chiaras and Bosses babies are feathering up lovely and the second baby is beyond beutiful and a must stay in the flock. It seems to be a grey cinnamon, with a very orange beak atm, so you can only imagine! A little baby chick has just hatched to Lilja and Frodo today! 😍 How happy one can be to be mistaken!! So this little chick most likely is egg number 3 or 4. Number three has had 20 days of incubation and number 4 has 18. I did mark all the eggs, but the markings have fainted and more than half of the egg shell has already been eaten up by the mom or the dad. Gotta get a better non toxic marker. I've heard someone using charcoal and that could porobably work well too. It's not that the 5 chicks already wasn't well enough, but the thought of Lilja not getting any babies of her own and only sitting and sitting - all for nothing is not a happy thought. Chiaras and Bosses first born is a grey opaline 💗, without a yellowface. Their second born is pushing out the whitest of feathers only, so we have to wait a little while to be able to tell more. But it's supposed to be a grey (or a blue) opaline cinnamon, and I'm pretty sure also without the yellowface. -- -- -- Olinki

Unfortunately it looks like Frodos and Liljas eggs are unlikely to hatch at all. I've been waiting for the eggs to hatch, but nothing seems to happen. I checked them yesterday and it seems that most of them have dried out but there might still be life in the latest laid egg. So I can only keep my fingers crossed and hope for a little miracle here. All 6 eggs in the nest were fertile. Chiaras and Bosses babies on the other hand are doing well. All 5 of them are growing beautifully and I have banded already 4 of them. The parents are also doing a wonderful job. One can but wonder!

The chicks are growing nicely and the eldest is now 15 days old. I can be pretty sure that she is not a yellowface, and she looks like a she, but there I can be mistaken! Second baby is now 11 days, he's developing less pigment because of the cinnamon gene and he looks a little bit like a he already, though again, I might be mistaken 😅 4 of the chicks are already banden, with numbers 04, 05, 06 and 07. I was a little too hasty with number 3 and the ring fell off the next day, so I've done it twice. The parents are eating almost non stop and no wonder, the babies are growing so fast!

Ensimmäinen poikanen on rengastettu sunnuntaina ja seuraavan rengastus olisi kenties huomenna, tai jo tänään, en ole nyt illasta päässyt vielä kurkistamaan pönttöön. Poikasia Chiaralla ja Bossilla on nyt 4 ja viides muna vaikuttaisi, vastoin aiempia havaintoja, olevan myöskin hedelmöittynyt, joten olin ilmeisesti unohtanut kirjata ylös seitsämännen munan muninnan. Pöntössä on kuitenkin vain viisi munaa, sillä yksi oli tyhjä ja yksi ei kuoriutunut. Ykkösellä näkyi aamulla jo pigmenttiä ja se heilutteli siipiään ja juuri äsken kuulin pöntöstä myös innokasta läpytystä, kun poikanen on kokeillut siipiensä toimivuutta ihan kunnolla :) Aika ihana pieni siivekäs perhe se on. Ei malta oikein edes odottaa kun ne kasvavat isommiksi! Värejä voi alkaa ounastelemaan n. 2 viikon päästä, toki joka päivä tästä eteenpäin näkee aina jotain uutta. Tämän pesueen kirjain on H. Nyt pöntössä piipittää jo kolmas poikanen! Sain vihdoin myös joka ikisen meillä syntyneen CC poikasen kuvan sivuille Poikueet , joten sieltä kelpaa nyt käydä katsomassa millaista väkeä täältä on aiemmin maailmaan saatettu :) Plus että undulaattivauvat on vaan aika ihania katseltavia. Aika sinivaltaista on ollut tuotanto ja olenkin jo kauan kaivannut meille vihreitä lintuja, mutta vielä ei sopivaa ole löytynyt. Olen niin monelle muulle taholle jo kertonut kakkospoikasen kuoriutumisesta että olen unohtanut kirjoittaa siitä täällä! Varsinainen kakkosmuna oli siis alusta alkaen tyhjä ja kolmonen valitettavasti jäi kuoriutumatta, mutta liekö näistä viivästyksistä johtuen sitten, nelosella olikin jo kiire ja se kuoriutui eilen vain 17pv haudonnan jälkeen! Ja se voi hyvin, tai siis, aamulla olen nähnyt sen viimeksi koska Chiara. Mutta koska Chiara, uskon sen voivat hyvin! Sain poikasista tosiaan tuolloin aamulla muutaman suttuisen kuvan ja 3 sekunnin videon, ja sitten Chiara ehtikin jo tulla paikalla joten oli aika laittaa luukku kiinni. Boss huolehtii perheestään kiitettävästi, se kulkee pöntössä syöttämättä sekä äitiä että kenties myös poikasia, tai sitten Chiara tekee sen saatuaan ruoan ensin isältä. Se syö hyvin harvoin itse. Ja jos oikein pinnistelen mielikuvitukseni virkeimmilleen saatan kuvissa tai videolla nähdä ehkä aavistuksen punervammat silmät joka tarkoittaisi kanelipoikasta! Molemmat

Mainitsin aiemmin laittaneeni vireille hakemuksen Suomen Lemmikkilintuyhdistyksen Kaijulin  kasvattajalistall e ja nyt on prosessi saatu päätökseen! Ajatustasollahan se alkoi jo yli vuosikymmen sitten, mutta itse paperityö ja hakuprosessi oli nopeaa ja hauskaa, koska mikäpä olisi mukavempaa kuin kirjoittaa kasvattamisesta ja omista suunnitelmista sen suhteen! :) Toivon kovasti, että muutkin kasvattajat innostuisivat ja lähtisivät mukaan Kaijulien kasvatustoimintaan, yhdessä saataisiin aikaan paljon! Tarkkasilmäiset ja vähemmänkin niin, huomaavat ehkä hienon bannerin jonka sertifioinnin mukana sain ja jota ei voi kuin ylpeydellä esittää :) Kiitos luottamuksesta! Olen vaihvihkaa myös päivitellut poikastilannetta ja arvelin tekeväni kenties erikseen vielä sivun pesinnöille niin se on selkeämpi. Epäonnisen alun jälkeen syksyn pesintöjen ensimmäinen poikanen on tänään kuoriutunut H-pesueeseen Chiaralle ja Bossille. Hedelmöittyneitä munia vaikuttaisi olevan yhteensä viisi. Viimeisen poikasen odotetaan kuoriutuvan 5. marraskuuta, sillä poikaset kuoriutuvat samaan tahtiin kuin munat on munittu - joka toinen päivä. Liljalla on nyt munia 4, joista ensimmäinen on tyhjä, mutta toisessa on jo suonet näkyvillä, kaksi uusinta ovat vielä liian tuoreita jotta niistä voisi sanoa, mutta eilen on myös pariteltu, joten tällekin parille varmasti tulee useampi kuin yksi poikanen. Ensimmäisen voidaan odottaa kuoriutuvan 11 marraskuuta. Poikasia on siis joulun aikoihin luovutettavissa uusiin koteihin ja kyyditys lomaviikoilla onnistuu ympäri Suomen. Pariskunnat huolehtivat toisistaan ja munistaan ainakin toistaiseksi todella hyvin, molemmissa pesinnöissä on yksi ensikertalainen ja toinen joka on pesinyt aiemmin.

Chiaran ja Bossin ensimmäinen muna on tullut ja toista odotetaan tänään. Ovat edelleen innoissaan pesimisestä ja jännä seurata parin edesottamuksia, kun viimeksi yhdistin Chiaran ja Frodon ilman että olivat pari entuudestaan. Undulaateilla voi niinkin harrastaa pesintälainaamista ja eri parien yhdistämistä, sillä ne useimmiten sopeutuvat uusiin ympäristöihin ja parin vaihdoksiin nopeasti. Ehkä omalla kohdalla voisin ajatella, että voimakkaasti pariutuneet linnut saisivat mahdollisuuksien mukaan pysyä yhdessä ja pesiä vain keskenään, mutta esimerkiksi meidän parvestamme löytyy poika-poika pareja ja myös yksi sisaruspari. Näistä kytköksistä huolimatta pesiminen toinen linnun kanssa on sujunut ongelmitta. Tämä on myös yksi harvoja kertoja kun olen päässyt pesittämään valmiin parin. Chiara ja Boss parittelevat joka päivä, monta kertaa päivässä ja se on aloitettu jo ennen ensimmäisen munan tuloa. Joten jos jotain kummallisuuksia ei ole päässyt tapahtumaan, oletan jo ensimmäisen munan olevan
